New Construction

What is a punch list and when do I create one?

By Bob Millaway July 26, 2026

Short Answer

A punch list is a document listing items that need to be corrected or completed before you close on your new home. It includes things like scratched countertops, misaligned cabinets, paint touch-ups, missing hardware, and any other incomplete or defective work. Create your punch list during the final walkthrough before closing, and do not close until the builder agrees to address all items. Walk through the home thoroughly with a notebook and camera.
